About Earthy Hues

In an era where the need of the hour is to go greener, Banana fibre products are indeed a good substitute for leather, plastic as well as paper. Earthy Hues is a firm that deals exclusively in banana fibre products.

Earthy Hues – An exciting journey continues !

Intrigued by the idea of making various products with hand loomed banana fibre fabric, two women entrepreneurs who share a love for ethnic and handmade products, joined hands to set up a firm called Earthy Hues. Earthy Hues is today, a design house which conceives a product, sources the raw materials and works in unison with a strong team of artisans who toil relentlessly to create a piece befitting the product line.

One of the first products from the Earthy Hues stable is the Cream Clutch with Red Border. The clutch is made out of black warp banana fibre fabric and the flap has a cream coloured silk fabric. A red thread-work border provides a perfect contrast. The perfect style accessory with ethnic wear for grand occasions, the Cream Clutch with Red Border turned out to be a runaway hit. To see our current collection of clutches click here

Another product that has been well accepted is the Top Crochet Bag. It has hand crocheted banana fibre on the top, and different fabrics like matka silk/cotton/kalamkari are attached to it in a unique way to give the bag its desired shape. The challenge was to get the pleats on the fabric right. The design is deemed as “cute and stylish” by our customers. To check out our new collection of bags please click here.

Sling Bags are a most sought-after product, be it for gifting or for personal use. One of the first sling bag designs to hit the market was the Sling bag with Mughal Digital Print Fabric. Almost a square, the sling bag has an adjustable handle, a side pocket with zip and a mobile pouch on the other side. The bag is touted for its convenience and style factor. Earthy Hues home décor products adorn the offices and homes of many. Earthy Hues designed a drum shaped hanging lamp when the FIFA Cup was happening in Brazil. We aptly named it the Samba Drum Lamp. The lamp is made from banana fibre-hibiscus fabric and has a silk piping. Currently, Samba Drum Lamps are available with piping in Wine Red cotton silk and Kalamkari fabric. The lamps are available in 12” and 10” diameter. To view them click here.

Though we had been successful in making square cushion covers, on our first attempt to make a Rectangular Cushion, we were anxious about the end result. However, it was a pleasant experience and the great response from our clientele assured us that we are on the right track. The Rectangular Cushions are available for sale with the filler. Click here for details.

Every year from November 4th to December 4th we celebrate “Earthy Hues Anniversary Month”. Different contests are held during this period where our customers actively participate and win Earthy Hues products. One such contest was “What Next?” We asked our clients for their suggestions on what they wanted us to make next. The winner was Mrs. Pallavi Navin, entrepreneur at R’ZU who proposed to us to make a Wallet. The wallet has been received well and we were elated that Mrs.Pallavi Navin was one of the first customers of the same. The latest design in wallets can be seen here.

Folders make excellent gifts. Hence when we decided to give it a ‘desi’ touch with Ikkat and Indigo fabrics we were confident that they would be bestsellers. Our folders have found their way to resorts, office tables, schools, homes etc. Click here to see our folder collection.

The journey of creating new products and celebrating the skills of the gifted artisans continue at Earthy Hues. Follow us on Facebook  or visit www.earthyhues.in and check out our latest product range.

Boutiques – an outlet for retail sales

When the idea behind Earthy Hues was on its way to becoming a reality, we realized that setting up a store of our own in “the world’s most dynamic city”, Bangalore, would require huge investments. Initially, we sold our products only from our homes. Though we received an encouraging response, we decided to look out for other avenues to sell.

We decided to find out if any store would be willing to offer us ‘shelf space’. The challenge here was not only to find a store willing to accept our products but also to find a store where our eco friendly and handcrafted products do not look out of place. After months of persistent efforts and speaking to many, we were successful in finding appropriate stores to showcase our products.

Cannanore – a Lore from a Loom, Whitefieldcann

It’s often difficult to find like-minded people to work with – people with the same passion, appreciation and love for everything that’s handmade or natural. Our search for someone like that ended with Cannanore- a lore from a loom, a quaint store which celebrates unique handcrafted products in the upscale Inorbit Mall, Whitefield.

Enjoy Online Shopping with Earthy Hues

In this day and age when everyday jargon includes “digital economy”, “going cashless”, “e- banking” etc., online shopping is becoming a much preferred option among the shoppers.  In the last 5 years, we at Earthy Hues have been witnessing a growing need among customers to become digitally literate.

Initially, the customers were a bit apprehensive about ordering a product online; most importantly, whether it’s safe to do money transactions online. Other concerns included  whether the product would match the description and whether the colour would be different from what’s pictured. Some wanted to know if the product would be damaged during transit. Their concerns were genuine and we did address them to our best of abilities in our own way.

As an entity that doesn’t have a physical store, Earthy Hues relies on online shopping to a large extent.  Hence it is critical that customers warm up to the idea of buying from online shopping portals.

Earthy Hues ensures that for each and every product, proper and detailed product descriptions are given along with accurate measurements. Having said that, our products are handcrafted and hence no products are the same. This factor actually makes each of our products one-of-a-kind.

Good quality pictures are uploaded for each product so that the customer gets an exact idea of the shape, colour, size etc. In spite of taking professional help for clicking product pictures, we do sometimes find ourselves in helpless situations where the camera is unable to capture the exact colour of the product or the natural colour of the banana fibre is slightly different in some pieces. In such scenarios, we do apprise the customers about it.

Whenever we receive an enquiry, we encourage the customers to make a purchase after surfing our website or any of the websites where our products are available. Earthy Hues products can be bought online from Earthy Hues Facebook page, Sellfie or Unfactory. The team of Earthy Hues is available for assistance or for clarifying any queries that the customer may have.

We can be reached at earthyhues.in@gmail.com or at www.earthyhues.in/Home/Contact. Alternately, we can be messaged on Sellfie or our Facebook page.

The payments can be done on these portals via online bank transfer/net banking/ credit/debit cards. Our experiences so far, validate our belief that e-banking is secure and safe. After the demonetization, we have had payments made through PayTM e-wallet as well.

Earthy Hues products are couriered through reliable courier services like India Post/ Professional Couriers/ DTDC etc to the desired shipping address anywhere in India. If it’s a gift, customers often tell us to leave a handwritten note on their behalf. The products are packed with utmost care. Products like lamps are not couriered as the risk of getting damaged during transit is high. We are looking for safer options to transport lamps. However, until then, lamps can be picked up from us.

Once an order is couriered, the customers are informed about the shipping details and the Tracking ID is provided for tracking the order. We consider the “order closed” only after the customer confirms that the order was received and that the customer is happy and satisfied with the product. In case of genuine issues*, the product is replaced**.

The convenience of shopping online is incredible and we aim to make the experience special for our customers.

Making of Banana Fibre & Earthy Hues- A layman’s guide

Five years and counting! Yes, Earthy Hues has been successfully and exclusively dealing with Banana fibre products for the last 5 years. Many find it unbelievable that such beautiful and unique products can be made out of banana fibre. We are often asked what banana fibre is and how it’s made. Here’s hoping that this article would answer those questions.

A number of clusters (consisting of women artisans) in different villages (mainly in Karnataka) are involved in the making of banana fibre fabric. Once the fruits are harvested, the bark from the banana trees are collected from different villages and brought to the workshop. The variety of banana trees that are usually used for this purpose are Rasa Palay, Putta Palay and Nendran. However, the first two varieties are more frequently used. The bark turns into fibre in the hands of the highly experienced artisans.

The fibre is made into yarn using the spinning wheel. This yarn is then hand-woven or handloomed on the traditional loom to make the banana fibre fabric. Hence, this process needs no electricity consumption. At times, while looming, other natural fibres like river grass, hibiscus etc are used to give a different look and texture to the fabric. Mostly cotton threads of varied colours are used as warp.

Weaving/looming banana fibre fabric is time-consuming and needs a lot of skill. It’s easy to make numerous products in a day in a mechanized industry but, it takes many days of meticulous effort to create handmade and hand loomed banana fibre products. The entire process is extremely rigorous.

Earthy Hues is a design house which specializes in banana fibre products. The products are conceptualized and designed by the Earthy Hues team of Rekha Rajagopal and Maya Ajay. At Earthy Hues, banana fibre fabric is used with fabrics like silk, kalamkari, cotton, ikkat etc. to make the products look attractive and contemporary. The fabric for this purpose is sourced from different places and many a times, directly from the weavers.

artisanEarthy Hues offers a wide range of products from home décor to stationery, from bags to clutches and accessories. Earthy Hues home decor products include blinds for doors and windows, lamps, cushion covers, table mats and runners. We work with interior designers to install banana fibre blinds, panels etc and also provide them with home decor products that add to the opulent and elegant feel of their project. Earthy Hues products have found their way to many homes and offices in India and abroad.

Eco friendly, biodegradable products have been gaining wide acceptance in the recent times. Earthy Hues aims to create awareness regarding eco-friendly banana fibre products and in the process, find a market for these products.

We, at Earthy Hues cater to those who appreciate the hard work and aesthetics involved in creating banana fibre products. Extremely versatile and durable, the scope of banana fibre fabric is immense.
